Set between Holiday in Death and Conspiracy in Death.

Midnight In Death eBook J D Robb

"It didn't look as though the last days of December 2058 were going to be much of a party."

FINAL DECISION: A quick and dirty crime investigation centered primarily on the personal aspect of Eve's job. The compressed nature of this story ratcheted up tension in this story and the emphasis on the personal rather than the crime details makes this a really good story.

THE STORY: It's Christmas and a killer has a naughty list of targets. Newly escaped from prison, the killer is out to get revenge against those who put him behind bars. He is taking, torturing and leaving the bodies in public view. Eve in in a race to stop him from killing more especially with both Dr. Mira and Eve are on the list so.

OPINION: This is an enjoyable novella and one that I recommend to people who just want to try out the In Death series without committing to a full novel. The crimes and investigation are compressed with a lot of pressure on Eve. Yet all the elements that make the series successful: the personal connection Eve has, the love between her and Rourke, the friendships that Eve has, and the humor and drama are all present in this story.

Things are clearer and more blunt in many ways because of the short story but I enjoyed that this book continues and expands all the important parts of the ongoing story in the series.

For readers of the series, this offers some drama and developments in Eve's relationship with Dr. Mira.

The novella also allows some intense moments with Eve and Rourke that I enjoyed a great deal.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book follows immediately from the events of HOLIDAY IN DEATH and also serves as an epilogue to that book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: MIDNIGHT IN DEATH is a novella in the In Death series and is book 7.5 of that series. This novella fits right in for readers of the series, but is a nice little crime mystery for those who haven't dipped into the series yet.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Midnight In Death eBook J D Robb Reviews

This time around it's almost midnight, Mira ( police psychiatrist) one of Eve's few close friends is being held by a Mental Defective killer . Trapped in cage, suspended from the ceiling , it's an electrified and remotely controlled chamber of unspeakable pain and death! Her only chance seems to rest in the hands of lieutenant Eve Dallas of New York police and security. Eve herself a capable police officer is a mass of contradictions. An excellent record as an officer, but still struggling to overcome a horrendous nightmare of a childhood. A childhood which included , at very young age, killing her own father, with a knife, as he prepared to rape her, once again. Fortunately she has a good team of officers and a supportive husband , a husband, often referred to as the civilian, with a surprising number of resources at his disposal, jet copters, electronics, an endless supply of connections that come with being a personable engaging billionaire. So here it is almost midnight, Mira is on a mad mans death row and Eve calmly walks into the place alone!
Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb is an exceptional author, her works are always well written and edited. The only thing to note with this story is it lacks the depth of most her work, but it is a short story. It's a good read and good fun!
This is a very short story set in Lieutenant Eve Dallas' world, New York of 2058. Unlike some of the other reviews I've read, I did not read the original anthology that contained this story. It was a new read for me.

After just putting away a serial killer who liked to dress up like Santa, Eve just wants to spend the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve having some quiet time with her husband Roarke.

David Palmer, however has other plans for her. And everyone involved in his multiple murder conviction, including the judge, his court appointed attorney, psychologist Dr. Mira and Eve, as the arresting officer.

David considered it his mission to explore and record the mind's tolerance to extreme duress - pain, fear, starvation, dehydration and sensory deprivation. He did this by kidnapping his victims and torturing them until they died. Now he's escaped his maximum security facility for mental defectives. And he seems to have started up with his experiments again. Leaving on the first body a list of his intended victims. With Eve has his finale.

Being a short story, the plot and the action seems a bit rushed. There is a lot of information to get out in a very short time. It works, but like most short stories it seemed lacking. I wanted more details, more set up and to see a bit more of the investigative work. But it was still a good story.
This little novella seemed a little bit contradictory to the book before it, which made it seem a bit unnecessary and out of order to me. Even though it clearly referenced the case in the book before. But it talked about her old car even though she had gotten a new one in the last book, which had me confused. And basically I just felt with this novella like I do with all novellas in series like this...that it was not needed for the continuation of the series.

Nevertheless, I read it because I had bought it. And I am giving it 3 1/2 stars because it is Eve Dallas, and I love Eve Dallas, and once I settled in, it was a decent case, even though you knew right from the start who did it. The was the other thing. It was completely missing the whole element of surprise. Which is, I suppose, understandable, because really, there's not enough time in a novella to build the case like there is in a full-length book. But I love that element of surprise, and knowing from the start who did it, even if you still have to go the whole length of the novella to catch them just isn't the same for me.

So, if I were to reread the series, this is probably one I would skip. If I were to recommend the series to someone, I would also probably tell someone not to go out of their way to hunt this one down too hard...unless they were just a completionist like me. Which is why I will read all of the novellas for the series, even though I will probably complain about all of them just like I am about this one.
